The 5.7L HEMI is a tried and tested engine and has been a go-to powerhouse for muscle car and truck enthusiasts alike for over two decades. So, it makes sense that there are plenty of HEMI fans who view the eTorque HEMI with an “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” mentality. While there isn’t anything wrong with the standard 5.7L HEMI, it’s hard to argue that the eTorque version isn’t worth it for the fuel savings, additional towing capabilities, and better overall drivability.

One of the main benefits that the HEMI eTorque touts over its standard counterpart is improved fuel economy. The HEMI eTorque gets an additional 2 MPG combined over the standard 5.7L HEMI in the Ram 1500, largely due to the eTorque’s improved auto start-stop system. According to Car and Driver, a single 90-second auto stop-start event in the Hemi eTorque saves 1.7 ounces of gasoline, adding up to huge savings in the long run. The eTorque’s motor-generator also makes the engine restart almost unnoticeable due to the fact that the engine is restarted directly from the crankshaft rather than from the starter battery.

In addition to the fuel savings, the eTorque motor also supplies supplemental power and torque to the engine. In total, the HEMI eTorque’s motor-generator has an output of 16 horsepower and 49 lb-ft of torque. However, the torque is multiplied through the belt drive to the crankshaft, creating an actual assist of 130 lb-ft of torque. That additional torque can help get a sizable tow load moving from a standstill or simply provide more acceleration off the line.

Apple’s App Store “steering” policies violate the EU’s Digital Markets Act meant to encourage competition, said regulators in their preliminary ruling Monday. The European Commission has also opened a new investigation into Apple’s support for alternative iOS marketplaces in Europe, including the core technology fee it charges developers.

“Our preliminary position is that Apple does not fully allow steering,” said Margrethe Vestager who heads up competition policy in Europe. “Steering is key to ensure that app developers are less dependent on gatekeepers’ app stores and for consumers to be aware of better offers.”

Under the DMA, Apple and other so-called gatekeepers must allow app developers to steer consumers to offers outside their app stores free of charge. Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, ByteDance, Meta, and Microsoft are the six gatekeepers who had to be fully compliant with rules as of March 2024.

“Throughout the past several months, Apple has made a number of changes to comply with the DMA in response to feedback from developers and the European Commission,” said Apple spokesperson Peter Ajemian in a statement sent to The Verge. “All developers doing business in the EU on the App Store have the opportunity to utilize the capabilities that we have introduced, including the ability to direct app users to the web to complete purchases at a very competitive rate. As we have done routinely, we will continue to listen and engage with the European Commission.”

Apple is the first to be charged under the DMA rules after the EU’s competition authority opened several investigations in March. (Meta and Google are also being scrutinized for non-compliance.) Apple has time to respond to the European Commission’s preliminary assessment ahead of its final ruling before March 2025. Apple could be fined up to 10 percent of its annual global revenue for infringement, or $38 billion based on last year’s numbers. That increases to 20 percent for repeat infringements.

The European Commission has also opened new proceedings into Apple’s support for alternative iOS app stores. The investigation is focused on the contentious Core Technology Fee, the laborious multi-step process required for users to install the third-party marketplaces, and Apple’s eligibility requirements for developers.

“We have also opened proceedings against Apple in relation to its so-called core technology fee and various rules for allowing third party app stores and sideloading,” said Vestager. “The developers’ community and consumers are eager to offer alternatives to the App Store. We will investigate to ensure Apple does not undermine these efforts.”

On Friday, Apple blamed “regulatory uncertainties” related to the DMA for delaying the rollout of cornerstone iOS 18 features to European users this year. Apple blamed interoperability requirements that could undermine user privacy and data security.

Meta released a web tool letting you manually update your Quest headset to the latest system software version.

By default Quest system software automatically “rolls out” to headsets gradually over days or even weeks.

The new Meta Quest Software Update Tool is a webpage that uses the WebUSB API to sideload the latest update to your USB-connected Quest headset instead.

WebUSB works on Windows, Mac, Linux, ChromeOS, and even Android via Chromium browsers such as Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Opera, and Samsung Internet. That means you can use the Meta Quest Software Update Tool on almost any host device except an iPhone or iPad, and if you’re using a Mac you’ll need to use a browser other than Safari.

To access the tool you’ll need to be signed in to Meta.com with the country set to the US. That’s not to say you need a US account, to be clear, you just need to set the site region to ‘United States’.

The tool will guide you through putting your headset into Sideload Update mode. With your headset off, you hold down the power and volume down buttons together until the Meta logo appears, then release them. Using the volume buttons, you select Sideload Update. Finally, you connect the headset to a PC or Android phone and the tool will install the latest software update.

This won’t reset your headset, and you’ll keep all your apps, files, and data.

Quest 3 Update Significantly Reduces Passthrough Distortion

The Quest v66 update “significantly” reduces Quest 3’s passthrough distortion and warping, according to Meta.

While using this new tool will put your headset on the latest software version, it’s important to note that this doesn’t actually give you all the latest features. Meta often releases new features as sub-updates, and these are rolled out dynamically as dictated by Meta’s servers. That includes the major Quest 3 passthrough improvement in v66.

You’ll still be able to get most new features though, and Meta describes the purpose of the tool as to “help fix software-related issues such as slow performance and unresponsive apps”.

While the new CAMM and LPCAMM memory modules for laptops have garnered a great deal of attention in recent months, it’s not just the mobile side of the PC memory industry that is looking at changes. The desktop memory market is also coming due for some upgrades to further improve DIMM performance, in the form of a new DIMM variety called the Clocked Unbuffered DIMM (CUDIMM). And while this memory isn’t in use quite yet, several memory vendors had their initial CUDIMM products on display at this year’s Computex trade show, offering a glimpse into the future of desktop memory.

A variation on traditional Unbuffered DIMMs (UDIMMs), Clocked UDIMMs (and Clocked SODIMMs) have been created as another solution to the ongoing signal integrity challenges presented by DDR5 memory. DDR5 allows for rather speedy transfer rates with removable (and easily installed) DIMMs, but further performance increases are running up against the laws of physics when it comes to the electrical challenges of supporting memory on a stick – particularly with so many capacity/performance combinations like we see today. And while those challenges aren’t insurmountable, if DDR5 (and eventually, DDR6) are to keep increasing in speed, some changes appear to be needed to produce more electrically robust DIMMs, which is giving rise to the CUDIMM.

Standardized by JEDEC earlier this year as JESD323, CUDIMMs tweak the traditional unbuffered DIMM by adding a clock driver (CKD) to the DIMM itself, with the tiny IC responsible for regenerating the clock signal driving the actual memory chips. By generating a clean clock locally on the DIMM (rather than directly using the clock from the CPU, as is the case today), CUDIMMs are designed to offer improved stability and reliability at high memory speeds, combating the electrical issues that would otherwise cause reliability issues at faster memory speeds. In other words, adding a clock driver is the key to keeping DDR5 operating reliably at high clockspeeds.

All told, JEDEC is proposing that CUDIMMs be used for DDR5-6400 speeds and higher, with the first version of the specification covering speeds up to DDR5-7200. The new DIMMs will also be drop-in compatible with existing platforms (at least on paper), using the same 288-pin connector as today’s standard DDR5 UDIMM and allowing for a relatively smooth transition towards higher DDR5 clockspeeds.

CUDIMMs: The Key To Faster DDR5

As outlined above, one of the biggest challenges for highly-clocked memory subsystems today is maintaining signal integrity, particularly over relatively long distances and with multiple interconnections (e.g. multiple DIMMs per channel). Traditionally, the weight of this task has primarily fallen on the memory controller/CPU, and to a lesser extent the motherboard, as UDIMMs are relatively dumb devices on their own. But with CUDIMMs, that paradigm is set to change by making DIMMs just a bit smarter, and thus making them capable of helping out with maintaining signal integrity.

The big change here is the addition of a clock driver (CKD), which receives a base clock signal and regenerates it to redistribute to memory components on the module. A CKD essentially buffers the incoming clock signal, and then amplifies it on the way out when it drives the clock signal to the memory chips on the DIMM. CKDs also incorporate signal conditioning features such as duty cycle correction, which allows for for accurate timing and jitter reduction, and minimizing the overall rapid variations in the clock signal’s timing.

Minimizing clock skew – the difference in arrival times of the clock signal at different components – is another key function of the CKD. By matching propagation delays for each clock path, the CKD can ensure memory chips (and DIMMs) remain fully synchronized.

Meanwhile, phase adjustment capabilities allow CKD to align the clock signal with the specific timing needs of different components, which means some additional work on the memory module maker’s side. Which is perhaps why we have not seen many memory module vendors demonstrating their CKD-enabled products today as they still need to get familiar with the technology.

All told, placing clock drivers in DIMMs isn’t a new idea; the CUDIMM concept is largely a scaled-down version of the Registered DIMM (RDIMM), which has been used in servers for years and is the only type of DDR5 DIMM that Intel and AMD’s server (and workstation) chips support. But whereas RDIMMs are a more expansive solution that buffers the command and address busses alongside the clock signal, CUDIMMs buffer only the clock signal and leave everything else untouched. In that context, CUDIMMs are essentially a half-step to RDIMMs.

And while there are some CPU designers out there that would no doubt be ecstatic if all systems used RDIMMs (and ECC, as well), the economics of consumer PCs favors cheaper and less complex solutions when they’re available. The design of the CKD itself reflects this; a JEDEC-standard CKD is just 35 pins, and nearly half of those are merely voltage/ground pins. So while CKDs represent an additional cost for DIMM construction, they are rather purposely designed to be cheaper to build than RDIMMs.

In any case, CKDs will be coming to all of JEDEC’s DDR5 memory form factors. So along with the CUDIMM, we’ll have the Clocked SODIMM (CSODIMM), and even DDR5 CAMM2 memory modules will use clock drivers.

Though since the need (or at least, standardization) around clocked DIMMs is based on the memory frequency, CUDIMMs and their other variations are all designed to be backwards compatible with existing DDR5 systems and memory controllers. Which means that a CUDIMM will use the same 288-pin DIMM slot as standard DDR5 DIMMs.

Under the hood, this is accomplished by allowing a CUDIMM to either run a clock signal though the buffers on its CKD, or bypass those buffers entirely, running in the aptly named PLL Bypass mode. Officially, bypass mode is only supported for speeds up to DDR5-6000 (3000MHz), so JEDEC complaint DIMMs will be expecting to use CKD mode (Single PLL or Dual PLL) at DDR5-6400 and beyond. The end result being that a CUDIMM should work with a slower/older DDR5 memory controller by going into bypass mode, whereas DIMMs without a CKD won’t be available at the higher speeds that require a CKD (not at JEDEC-standard voltages and timings, at least).

CUDIMMs and CSODIMMs at Computex

Several memory vendors, including G.Skill, TeamGroup, and V-Color, had CUDIMMs and CSODIMMs on display at Computex. Given that these new DIMMs go hand-in-hand with new platforms, the memory vendors aren’t talking too much about specifics here. But since they had the hardware on display, don’t be too surprised if we see them go into production systems (and retail shelves) sooner than later.

Biwin is a relatively new name on the market of enthusiast-grade memory modules (as previously the company sold high-performance devices under the Acer Predator brand, and still does, so to speak). But it enters the game with advanced 16 GB and 32 GB modules rated for 6400 – 8800 MT/s operation, which is higher compared to ‘regular’ enthusiast-grade DIMMs . These devices are set to be available in September.

G.Skill, which has been a major enthusiast memory vendor for ages, demonstrated its Trident Z5 CK CUDIMMs at Computex as well. Though the company did not really highlight their performance, perhaps because it is still polishing off its CKD-enabled products and they are not yet setting records. At the end of the day, G.Skill has showcased a heavily overclocked system running at DDR5-10600 using regular DDR5 modules, so early CUDIMMs are not quite as eye-catching in comparison.

By contrast, TeamGroup demonstrated its DDR5-7200 memory modules with a CKD chip at the trade show.

Finally, unlike some of its rivals, V-Color seems to be taking some serious advantage of CKD chips for high-performance memory offerings, as it showcased both CUDIMMs and CSODIMMs at the trade show. The company is planning to offer 16GB and 24 GB CUDIMMs with speed bins between 6400 MT/s and 9000 MT/s at 1.1 V – 1.45 V. 9000 MT/s is faster than any easily-attainable enthusiast-class memory kits available today, so this is meant to highlight advantages of clock unbuffered memory modules.

There are many suppliers of high-performance memory modules and yet only four of them demonstrated their CUDIMMs at Computex. Of those, only two decided to talk about expected performance of CUDIMMs (TeamGroup’s demonstration looks like a work-in-progress type of thing). Though with the JEDEC standard having been on the books for almost half a year now, they will no doubt soon be joined by the myriad of other memory vendors that call the PC market home.

When we think about applications for virtual reality, we often consider two major categories: entertainment and practical use. Together, these categories cover a majority of noteworthy uses for VR, from video games and cinema to medical treatments. But another category that seems increasingly likely to gain ground is design.

Broadly speaking, there are various types of design projects that can be simplified and improved in VR. Below, we’ll look into three of them. We haven’t necessarily seen VR design applications in these areas, but it’s become clear that such programs would have a lot to offer.

1. Building Architecture

It actually makes some sense to think of VR in architecture as an evolution of gaming concepts. After all, one of the first major gaming titles people were excited to see in virtual reality was Minecraft — which in part involves designing structures. The concept of VR in architecture is fundamentally no different. It means being able to navigate a 3D environment to build structures with ease, and at scale.

In this case we actually have seen some early examples of VR applications, too. Metropolis Mag looked into architectural VR and suggested that the technology “has the potential to revolutionize the design process.” Indeed, it certainly seems as if the ability to design, edit, and observe entire architectural products in interactive 3D environments could have massive implications. These may include anything from speeding up renderings to collaborating on projects with fellow designers around the world,

2. PCB Design

PCBs, for people who may not recognize the abbreviation, are printed circuit boards. They house the electrical connectors and various components that direct the functions of virtually all, everyday electronics. And their design is quite complicated. Right now, PCBs are made largely through software programs that enable people to customize features, layer schematics, and so on. But in VR, this could become a more hands-on process; edits would be simpler, and virtual testing could help people to perfect designs.

As of today, we don’t know of a full VR option for PCB design. The closest thing is perhaps 3D measuring through Altium Designer, a program that “allows the complete visualization” of circuit board schematics “in full, three-dimensional detail.” This can certainly simply the process, and even allow for more complex designs. But going a step further, and allowing people to actually interact with larger models representing tiny PCBs, could be a game changer.

3. Home Décor

We could well see virtual reality revolutionize home decorating as well. There are already some similar applications that are being used in homes. We covered one in our write-up ‘Virtual Reality Brings a New Dimension to Real Estate’ — specifically noting how VR is expanding the market by making open houses virtually accessible from anywhere in the world. Another example, in mixed reality at least, is augmented reality’s use in home shopping, which allows people to envision furniture in place before buying it.

What we’re likely to see in time though is a whole suite of VR apps that are specifically built for home design. These apps could effectively showcase virtual versions of home layouts alongside limitless furnishing and decorating options, and allow people to fully customize their homes without ever stepping foot inside them. In some cases this could purely serve as a preliminary design; in others it could pair with purchasing options, the way the aforementioned AR shopping apps do.

These three suggestions have relatively little to do with one another. It’s a pretty big leap from architecture to PCB design, and from PCB design to home decorating. The variety between these examples, though, should help to convey the vast potential of virtual reality in various design-related tasks and industries.

VR tech is pretty interesting, and while it’s not as big as other forms of gaming, it’s grown quite significantly since the original Oculus Go was released. In fact, there are some highly acclaimed modern VR games like Half-Life: Alyx that are a lot of fun, and with something like the Meta Quest, you don’t even need a high-end gaming PC to run it. Luckily, even if you’ve spent money on one of many gaming PC deals out there, you can still buy a high-end VR headset that can use all that power. To that end, we’ve collected deals on some of the best VR headsets on the market, although if you’re not quite ready to take that plunge, check out some of these other great video game deals.

Meta Quest 2 — $199, was $200

Even though the Meta Quest 3 came out quite recently, the Meta Quest 2 is still a pretty powerful contender, especially since it has a wider library and app support than the Quest 3 currently has. Even more so, the Quest 2 is a lot cheaper than the Quest 3, and with the latest permanent discount down to just $200, that’s a whole $300 or so difference from the Quest 3. Of course, the Quest 3 does have more advanced AR and slightly better performance with software and Wi-Fi, but that may not be worth the extra cost for some. Either way, be sure to check out the breakdown between Quest 2 and Quest 3 to get a better sense of what you should pick up.

Meta Quest 2 & Hard Shell Custom Travel Case Bundle — $255, was $310

If you’re the type of person who moves around a lot and likes to share their games and gaming gear with friends, then this bundle that includes this hard-shell custom travel case is the way to go. It has a spot for all the gear, including headphones and cables, and will protect your Quest 2 pretty well. Not only that, but if you end up deciding to upgrade to the Quest 3 at some point down the line, this case also fits that, too, so you won’t have to throw it away once you upgrade.

HTC VIVE XR Elite — $951, was $1,100

If you’re not interested in going the Meta Quest route, the HTC VIVE XR Elite is a viable alternative, although it’s much more expensive than the other two options. It’s more comfortable, of course, given the cost, and it has some excellent AR capabilities. It also has a 1920 x 1920 resolution per eye, which is very high, while the 90Hz refresh rate is pretty good, too. Probably one of the best things about the Vive XR Elite, though, is the joysticks, which are a bit more advanced than what the Quest has, making it a much better experience when interacting with a virtual world.

Just a few years ago, the biggest names in the VR headset market consisted of HTC and Oculus; however, in today’s market, we have numerous head-mount displays across various brands including HP, Dell, Lenovo, and Samsung. Even Sony has thrown its hat in the ring in the form of the PlayStation VR headset. With the increased competition in the VR hardware market, the overall quality of headsets has become more polished, and the increasing number of headset options is excellent news for both gamers and deal hunters.

Typically, some of the best deals are found on third-party retailers, including Amazon and Walmart; however, the biggest names in the market, HTC and Oculus, have special promotions available on their websites.
